On September 23, 2024, Israel carried out a barrage of missile strikes over the Israel-Lebanon border into Lebanon in what resulted in the deadliest attack on Lebanon since 2006. Over 500 people were killed and over 1,800 injured. This comes after the two nations have sent missile strikes back and forth since the beginning of the conflict in Gaza when Hamas killed over 1,200 Israelis and kidnapped another 200 people on October 7,2023. As Israel intensifies it’s attacks against the Iran backed Hamas and Hezbollah, the militant group governing Lebanon, tension in the greater region pushes towards the brink of an all out war in the Middle East. Israel claimed to be targeting military targets but similar to attacks in Gaza, video and pictures and the large death toll shed light on the intensity and breadth of the attacks by Israel. While Israel widens its sights on Lebanon, the death toll in Gaza climbs to over 42,000 Palestinians. On September 27, nearly one year since the war began, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netenyahu Addressed the UN General Assembly in New York City. Denouncing the General Assembly as a “swamp of anti semitic bile” as diplomats left the room before his speech, Netanyahu took his stage to vehemently denounce the Pro-Palestine protests in the United States that have taken over cities across the country. Speaking directly to Iran Netanyahu stated: “There is no place in Iran that the long arm of Israel cannot reach. And that is true of the entire Middle East.”

These pictures were taken in New York City as protesters gathered at the New York Public Library to take the streets of New York to call for an end to the war and an immediate ceasefire. Protesters have been extremely active leading up to Netanyahu’s address to the UN in New York, marching through the streets and protesting in the subways on several occasions. Led by members of The Answer Coalition and The Palestinian Youth Movement, protesters marched from Bryant Park through Midtown , following police as they made their way to the UN headquarters where they met a wall of barricades. The crowd of thousands soon turned around and made their way to the New York Times headquarters before gathering in Times Square declaring that to be their starting point for Oct 5 where they will meet again in protest of the year’s long war in Gaza.
